The Works of Aziz Mahmud Hudayi

The Ottoman Caliphate fostered many scholars of Islam and facilitated them to spread the Dīn. Amongst these notables was the eminent scholar Aziz Mahmud al-Hüdayi (D. 1038 AH):

His most renowned work was a Qurʾānic commentary in Arabic distinguished by its pedagogical and directive methodology, dealing with discussions on guidance, moral cultivation, and ethical conduct as central objectives of the Qurʾān. This work is interwoven with the discourse of the Sufi masters, adopting an esoteric mode in directing the meanings of the verses and opening hearts. Nevertheless, the author presents this material within a carefully crafted framework, expressed in a lucid, refined, and robust style.

Shaykh Hüdayi’s scholarly personality is clearly manifest in the tafsīr. It abounds in valuable insights, subtle observations, and methodological cautions that are not mere transmissions from earlier works, but rather stem from his own original contributions and critical investigations—one of the most important features of the book. The sources of the work are numerous, some cited directly and others indirectly.

Along with this, the author penned a number of treatises in a number of subjects, including Fiqh, Sira and Tasawwuf.

Dar al-Imam Yusuf al-Nabhani (Beirut, Lebanon) intends to unearth this lost Ottoman heritage and release an explanation of the Quran which has never been printed before. The project is intended to be completed within 18 months. A total of £50,000 is required to pay the wages of a large, specialist team which will be working on this project. Support today!

Osmanlı Hilâfeti, İslâm âlimlerinin yetişmesine büyük katkı sağlamış ve onların dini yaymalarını kolaylaştırmıştır. Bu seçkin isimler arasında, büyük âlim Şeyh Aziz Mahmud Hüdâyî Hazretleri (v. 1038/1628) de yer almaktadır.

Onun en meşhur eseri, Arapça kaleme alındığı Kur’ân-ı Kerîm tefsiridir. Bu tefsir; rehberlik, ahlâk terbiyesi ve güzel ahlâkı Kur’ân’ın temel hedefleri olarak ele alan, öğretici ve yönlendirici bir metotla temayüz etmiştir. Eser, âyetlerin mânalarını yönlendirme ve kalplere hitap etme noktasında mutasavvıfların üslubunu ve işârî yaklaşımını benimsemekle birlikte, yazar tüm bu muhtevayı açık, zarif ve güçlü bir dil ile, titizlikle oluşturulmuş bir çerçeve içerisinde sunmaktadır.

Şeyh Hüdâyî’nin ilmî şahsiyeti bu tefsirde açıkça görülmektedir. Eser; sadece önceki kaynaklardan nakillerden ibaret olmayan, bilakis onun kendi özgün katkılarından ve derin ilmî tahkiklerinden kaynaklanan kıymetli tespitler, ince nükteler ve metodolojik uyarılarla doludur. Bu husus, kitabın en önemli özelliklerinden biridir. Eserde kullanılan kaynaklar oldukça fazladır; bunların bir kısmı doğrudan, bir kısmı ise dolaylı olarak zikredilmiştir.

Bunun yanı sıra müellif fıkıh, siyer ve tasavvuf başta olmak üzere çeşitli alanlarda birçok risale de kaleme almıştır.

Beyrut, Lübnan merkezli Dârü’l-İmam Yusuf en-Nebhânî Yayınevi, bu kayıp Osmanlı mirasını gün yüzüne çıkarmayı ve bugüne kadar hiç basılmamış olan bu Kur’ân tefsirini yayınlamayı hedeflemektedir. Projenin 18 ay içerisinde tamamlanması planlanmaktadır. Bu çalışma için görev alacak geniş ve uzman bir ekibin ücretlerini karşılamak üzere toplam 50.000 £ sterline ihtiyaç vardır.
